"I have gradually confused photography and life and as a result of this I believe I am able to work out of myself at an almost precognitive level."
— Jerry Uelsmann

Artist's Statement:

The work I produce is abstract in nature and only occasionally will I develop a series with purely "straight" images. Seeing, feeling, interacting with the abstract surrounding me has been an organic part of my life for so long that I tend to think and see in this manner. The work therefore speaks in a more natural voice and consequently conveys more of the given concept to the viewer.

I work in integrated series since I feel that single images can't adequately encapsulate complex issues. Each series is normally exclusive to its self and there is little, if any, "carry over" between series. The issues, ideas, concepts explored in these series can range anywhere from the human condition to that of the current political environment to explorations of concepts I find intensely interesting.

My perceptions of the subject matter I work with are constantly evolving, so I occassionally return to a completed series and see if any new images can, or should, be added. In this manner my work is also constantly evolving and my viewers can explore new facets of old series. While the symbology used in a series originates on a personal level, this type of "evolution" lends itself quite well to the viewers' adoption of the symbology and therefore to a deeper understanding of all the series.

The responses to my images are often visceral and unexpected. Either a strong emotional attachment is born or an equally strong aversion to the image content will be experienced by the viewer. Either reaction is quite acceptable to me because they are indicative of the viewers' participation with the art. It is just as much the viewers' responsibility to determine what the individual image means to them, as well as what the entire series means, as it is for me to create the image and series. Participate and we've all succeeded.
